If you are a web developer or agency and want to learn how to get clients for web design, then you are in the right place. You see, in the era where everyone is getting into web development and want to make websites, and it can get quite competitive to find clients for web designing.
Here’s the thing, to get clients for web design, you do not need to sweat your body, just follow the step by step guide I have laid out for you in this article, and I can say that it can land you a lot of clients.
And the best thing? This technique works on any niche and service. It doesn’t have to be web designing. But since I am a web developer myself and this technique I used to get web design clients, I will share it with respect to that.
But before we get into the guide, let’s understand 5 things you should NOT be doing to get your clients.
A. Do not spam on the Facebook groups
I see a lot of new website developers who log in to facebook and promote their services directly inside of Facebook. While I get that they want to land clients quickly, this rarely works, and you might get a ban from Facebook for doing this. And this is where my PSF strategy comes to play. If you implement it as I share, then you will land a client.
B. Do not send random emails to anyone
Few web developers read that sending cold email is a good way to land a client and starts sending random emails to every email address they found on the internet. But again, this could make your email looks spammy and might land you on the spam folder.
C. Do not DM everyone in your friend list
Then comes third type of people who DM their facebook friends, LinkedIn connections, Twitter, or Instagram followers with their service sales pitch. Again this could get you a ban by respective platform, and people hardly likes to get promotional emails in social media inbox.
D. Do not do cold calls without an effective strategy
Majority of people hates doing calls, heck if you are an introvert like me then you might get anxious on picking up call of your friends or existing clients. Doing cold calls work, but you need a proper strategy in place to make it work.
E. Do not do paid ads without a funnel or lead magnet
Do not go and randomly send traffic to your website before having a proper funnel in place. If you do it, then you will lose all your money without any significant ROAS (Return On Ad Spends)
Now you may be wondering, “But Durvesh, what should I do then? I heard a lot of people do this and it does work for them.”
While I get that this technique does work, but there is a step by step process that you need to follow to make them work effectively. Without doing that, this won’t work, and you will end up wasting your time and efforts.
And that’s where my PSF method comes into play. It is the most effective way to land your first (or next) clients for free. So without further ado, let’s go into step by step strategy on what is PSF and how to get clients for web design using it.
What’s PSF in Nutshell?
PSF stands for Portfolio, Screenshot, Feedback. In this method, you will make a Portfolio for your service, in this case, web design. Then you will snap Screenshots, and then you will ask for Feedback on social media.
Do not get bogged down by its simplicity. It is so simple yet effective technique that I always use it anytime I want to fetch some clients. In fact, I tried this same technique last month to land 2 paying clients in 3 days.
But make sure you follow below step by step guide to get awesome results.
Here’s a step by step guide on how to get clients for web design for free with PSF
Step 1: Portfolio (Make a good looking website)
Making a good looking website is the most necessary step. Take your time and build a website that is attractive to your eyes and pleasant. When a user looks at your site, she should get a positive vibe.
This doesn’t have to be the most feature friendly website. You can simply make a website with your portfolio like who you are, what you do etc.
Or you can also recreate the copy of an existing site like how I recreate Gary Vee’s home page made in WordPress into Clickfunnels
Step 2: Screenshots (Take screenshots of your website)
After you make your website, your second job is to take screenshots of your website. You can use a tool like “Full Page Screen Capture” to snap a full-screen look of your website.
Also, snap 2-3 screenshots focusing on the best-looking part of your website
Here’s how I snapped when I redesigned Tony Robbin’s homepage
Step 3: Feedback (Login to Facebook and post screenshots on the Facebook groups)
Now comes the meat of the guide. You should post your screenshots on the relevant Facebook groups. Groups can be related to business, freelancing, or niche-specific.
While posting the screenshots, make sure you do not do a sales pitch instead add a description like “hows it?” or “My first web design, please share feedback.”
You can even post it on your facebook profile, LinkedIn groups, or on Reddit.
I used the same technique in one facebook group, and I got 66 Likes, 80 Comments, and a lot of inquires.
How does this work?
Asking for genuine feedback will make it no sales, so the chances are that admins of the group won’t remove it, plus whoever has an interest in having a website developed will message you for more details.
This is an indirect way of getting clients, but trust me, this does work, and it should be your prime strategy when you are starting out to get clients for web designing.
What to do when you get an inquiry?
Once you start to get feedback, start adding the people who comment on your post as a friend. You might also receive a few inquiries. At that time, you can do two things.
- Work for free in return of testimonial
- Work on a nominal rate
Which path to take comes down to your personal choice. I took a 2nd path where I worked on small nominal fees. Also, some clients want to make it a secret or NDA thing, so in that case, the 2nd path is the best way to go about it.
But remember when you get an inquiry doesn’t get greedy and ask for a higher ticket price as your first thing should be to land a client. Money can come later, but your first job, especially when starting out, is to get a few clients in hand.
Other Benefits Of PSF
Other than getting a client for your web design services, there are more perks of using the PSF method. Let’s learn about it
I) Personal Branding
Sharing your expertise and valuable content on groups means people would start to recognize you as an expert in web designing. This will help you brand your self in the niche.
II) Referrals
Even if someone may not have a need now, there might come a time when they or their friends might need a website, and at that time, who will they come to? YOU.
III) Tags & Mention
In the groups, if someone needs a web design service, then the natural selection of other group members would be you as you are branding yourself in the group as a go to guy for web design service.
Conclusion
That’s it from this article. I shared with you how to get clients for web design using my PSF strategy. If you fully implement it 100%, then I see no reason why you should not land your next client. And in fact, I challenge you to work on this strategy for the next 7 days and document your journey. Let me know how does it go.
And before we part the ways for now, please share this article with your friends, connection, and family members. Remember, “Sharing is ……” You know it 🙂
